Because they are characters, not people, puppets are the ideal medium for discussing sensitive issues. Puppets create a world in which we recognize ourselves and identify with the characters as the drama unfolds. At the same time, a puppet show seems to hold a piece of "safety glass" between the action and the audience-although we are drawn into the drama, we are not threatened by it. It is an extraordinary phenomenon that an audience will accept from a puppet what would cause offence or embarrassment if it came from a live actor. That is why puppets are now widely used in teaching about AIDS and other sensitive matters. Puppets can portray "bad" characters in a community without pointing the finger at a real individual. They can be used to draw out disagreements within a community or a family without fanning the flames of conflict in the audience. They can be used to talk to black and white children about race and conflict. They can be used to promote the rights of girls to adults who will not listen to a lecture. They can perform to a mixed audience in areas where men and women must sit apart to watch live actors. A puppet may look terrifying, but its sense of menace is contained. Partly, this is because most puppets are small (even large puppets are often no more than child-sized). But it is not just a question of size. Puppets function more completely within their own "theatre" than human actors do. We are often aware of actors as people who put on a part for a performance and put it aside when they leave the stage. Puppets have no existence independent of their characters. They come without the baggage that accompanies a human actor, and they can get away with things that humans cannot.

Puppets can work the edge between entertainment and information. They line up alongside drama, storytelling, drumming and dance as art forms that can also teach and persuade. The entertainment comes first. It draws us in, and once we have lost ourselves in the world the puppets create, we accept the message without even realizing that we are learning. Lessons learned in this way are more likely to be remembered and to become part of our solid stock of knowledge.

You can move the mouth alone or the mouth and one arm or the arms alone. You can even use rods on the arms. To manipulate both mouth and one arm you would place your pinky and ring finger in the right arm, your pointer & middle finger in top of head and thumb in the lower jaw.

You can enter through the opening in the back or up the bottom of puppet or even under back of shirt. Follow up until you can put your four fingers in the roof of mouth. take your thumb and insert it to lower jaw of mouth so you can open and shut mouth (simulate a quaking duck with your hands). Using your thumb to open the lower mouth rather than choppy upper finger movement that cause the head to bob backwards (called chomping or biting) will give the puppet more realism (Basically move ONLY your thumb up and down.). With your other arm you will hold rod and move the hand to wave, blow kisses, wipe your nose or comb his hair back, cough, laugh and grab your chest or tummy. Hay pocas letras en nuestro alfabeto que requieren el movimiento del labio para decirlas. Así un ventrílocuo (Vent.) aprende a no mover los labios al hablar. Hay varios libros que describen el arte de ventriloquia minuciosamente. Yo lo diré simplemente. Se tiene que mover los labios a decir las letras "B", "F", "P", "M", "V", "W" (también "JU" y "HU"). Para decir estas letras sin mover los labios, dando la impresión de que el muñeco o títere habla, se tiene que hacer cambios. Se cambia las letras que requieren el movimiento del labio por letras que no requieren movimiento. Por ejemplo, si quiero decir "Bueno", cambio el "B" por un "D" y digo "Dueno". (¡Trátelo!) Parecerá el mismo en una frase. Quizá quiero decir "Fruta". Diría "THruta" (como la c o la z del español europeo en cinco o zapato). La palabra "Pregunta" sería "Tregunta". "Muy" sería "Nuy". "Varias" sería "Darias". Ahora usted puede decir "Darias THrutas", pero si lo dice corectamente, parecerá "varias frutas" y no tiene que mover los labios. También "el jueves" sería "el UeDes". Se puede practicarlo en el espejo. Usted dice, "Está bien, pero aún no puedo proyectar la voz." No, lo siento, pero usted no puede. La verdad es que nadie puede proyectar la voz. Ventriloquía es una ilusión. ¡Bienvenido al mundo ilusorio de la ventriloqía! Todos les gusta usar la imaginación, adultos también. A veces, digo a los niños, vamos a usar la imaginación ahora. Yo lo digo para no pensarían que el espectáculo es real. Siempre quiero decir la verdad. Ellos todavía les gusta mirar el espectáculo de ventriloquía o de títeres, aunque saben que es una ilusión. (¡Cuidado!: niños más pequeños tendrían miedo al muñeco o la títere.) Es muy importante no olvidar que proyectar la voz es una ilusión. Esta ilusión es posible porque el ventrílocuo no mueve los labios, pero los espectadores oyen la voz. (Si el ventrílocuo ha practicado bien en el espejo y puede hablar sin el movimiento del labio.) Una cosa que se puede practicar es decir las vocales: AEIOU. A propósito, se tiene que abrir la boca un poco. De lejos no será perceptible. No se debe preocupar si los labios mueven un poco, todos "Vents" tienen un poco movimiento del labio. Los espectadores serán ocupados mirando el muñeco o la títere; no se darían cuenta si sus labios mueven un poco. Para resumir, B=D, F=TH (como la Z del español europeo en zapato), P=T, M=N, V=D, W=U, JU=U, HU=U. La herramienta más importante del ventrílocuo es la capacidad del muñeco o la títere para distraer los espectadores. Ellos ven el movimiento de la boca del muñeco, y no ven el movimiento del labio del ventrílocuo, por eso, los espectadores van a mirar el muñeco principalmente. Es como una televisión. ¿El sonido sale del boca de la persona en la televisión? No, el sonido sale del parlante al lado de la pantalla. ¡Imagínate!, la televisión es un ventrílocuo. Cuando usted mira la televisión, ¿piensa De donde sale el sonido? No, a usted sólo le gusta mirar la programa. La ventriloquía y la televisión son lo mismo. Hay una cosa más que se puede aprender de la televisión. Las palabras son sincronizadas con los movimientos del labio. Movemos nuestros labios una vez por cada sílaba de cada palabra. Se necesita practicar mover la boca del muñeco una vez por cada sílaba. Es más realista en esta manera. Quizá usted ha mirado espectáculos de títeres en que los labios y las palabras no fueron sincronizados. Sin duda, a usted no le gustó mucho, porque no pareció natural. Así, se necesita practicar en un espejo. (¡Usted y el espejo serán buenos amigos!) Bueno, usted ha llegado a dominar todo... ¡No me hagas reir! Ningún ventrílucuo ha llegado a dominar todo. Ellos les gusta engañar la gente con su tontería. La gente les gusta usar la imaginación, entonces ellos les gustará lo que usted hace si se sumerge en el personaje escogido y tratar de pensar y actuar como este personaje. Es mejor crear una voz, diferente de su propia voz, que es apropiado para el personaje y tiene un timbre diferente. Ahora, ¿está usted listo para ser extrovertido y fascinante?
